WHEN TREES SPEAK...

Het centrale onderwerp van Héctor Hernández is Biophilia – de zin van verbondenheid tussen mensen en andere levende systemen; hun instinctieve band met de natuur. Hij trekt de huidige concepten over landschap en de manier waarop de mens zich tot zijn omgeving verhoudt in twijfel. Voor hem is het directe contact met de natuur en het ervaren van de omgeving essentieel. Tijdens zijn drie maanden lange verblijf bij ARE (Artist Residencies Enschede) heeft hij veel tijd in de Twentse bossen doorgebracht en een relatie met de natuur opgebouwd.

We zijn de vaardigheid om de emotionele en zintuigelijke kennis die ons door de natuur geboden wordt te ervaren veelal kwijt geraakt. Een sound installatie, bestaande uit gevallen boomstammen en geluidopnames van bomen biedt de bezoeker de mogelijkheid om een tijdelijke verbinding aan te gaan met de fluisterende bomen. Een reeks van video’s toont de subtiele bewegingen van de bomen in de wind, hun stem. Op dat moment praten ze met elkaar. Als onze zintuigelijke ervaringen de grenzen van taal kunnen overschrijden, wiegen we met hun heen en weer. Daarnaast analyseert hij middels een serie van foto’s de natuurlijke en de door de mens gemaakte structuren die de landschap vormen en wat binnen deze structuren gebeurt.

Héctor Hernández Rosas (1988, Castellón, Spanje) heeft een Master’s Degree in Fine Arts (Art, Creation & Research) aan de Complutense University of Madrid behaald.

Héctor Hernández work deals with Biophilia – the sense of connection between human beings and other living systems, their instinctive bond with nature. He questions the contemporary concepts about landscape and the way humans relate to their surroundings. Direct contact with nature and experiencing the rural area are fundamental. During his three-month residency at Artist Residencies Enschede, the process of staying in the woods of Twente and establishing a relationship with nature has been essential.

Emotional and sensory knowledge offered by nature is almost absent in our daily lives. We have lost the ability to feel it, to hear it. Through a sound installation, made of fallen logs, and recordings of the sound of trees, an immersive space is created. It offers the opportunity to reconnect to the temporality of the whispering trees. A series of videos show the subtle movement of the trees in the wind, their voice. That moment they interact with each other. If the sensory experience goes beyond the limits of language, we will sway with them. Finally, a series of photographs analyses the structures of the ecosystem and human structures that shape the landscape and what happens within these structures.
